A Little Bit About Bec Watson
Bec Watson is an accomplished artist with her own style and a unique view on life that is reflected in her art. Bec studied art at university and gained her Masters in Contemporary Art in Tasmania, where she now lives and works. Bec's choice of subject in her paintings, such as deer, owls, and animals or people boating, walking and sharing moments, even her portraits, is not what defines her work, but rather, it is her view of the world and the nature of life that fascinates and inspires her. Bec has an esoteric view on life and enjoys practices that reflect these ideas, such as Wabi Sabi, Sumi painting and Zen philosophies.
In 2003 Bec completed her fist Bachelors degree, majoring in Visual Arts. Three years later she furthered her education by undertaking a Bachelors in Secondary Teaching completing in 2008. In 2010 she moved from the Central Coast in NSW to Tasmania, where she taught in various schools for 4 years. During this time she began exploring the “stream of consciousness” concept in her artistic practice in order to deepen her knowledge of the creative potential of the unconscious mind. This challenged her to move beyond tight control of the paint and into the kind of ‘free flowing’ style that we see today in her artistic productions.
In 2013 Bec completed her Masters in Contemporary Art with her thesis and final body of work being given the Scotch Oakburn Award.
Bec’s practice involves allowing a highly textured surface to build through the continued application of paint that is applied while her head is turned away from the painting surface, hence permitting for peripheral vision only. This more fully allows the intuitive and comprehensive right brain powers of the subconscious mind to make the final decision for the paint’s application.
